FTE Supports Degree Apprentice place at University of Portsmouth

This September Four-Tees Engineers (FTE) Project Assistant Cameron Hendy commences his Civil Engineering Degree Apprenticeship at the University of Portsmouth. Working 1 day at university and 4 days a week on FTE projects.

Cameron joined FTE near the end of March this year having completed a Level 3 diploma in Engineering at Brockenhurst College whilst also working in pub kitchen doing pretty much everything apart from the cooking the main meals.

Cameron commented “I came to FTE in my Year 10 work experience from school and I was keen to come back to learn about engineering and the company more after finishing my course at college.

Since I arrived, it has been extremely interesting having had the opportunity to do a little of everything. I have helped the Project Managers, Contracts Director and Managing Director with various tasks and this has given me an early insight to the FTE broad business activities. I have ensured site supervisors and operatives submit their weekly sheets correctly, covering records such as van checks, safety close calls, site inspections and allocation sheets.

I have also had the opportunity to do some estimating, had an introduction to the design processes, as well as document control, monitoring and updating. My experience in the fabrication workshop has included being trained in the safe and accurate operation of the pillar drill, automated saw and grinders, whilst seeing first hand the the skills and attention to detail required by our fabricators.

Through my Degree Apprenticeship with FTE and The University of Portsmouth my aim is to gain a deeper understanding of engineering, how those things I will learn from my academic study translate into the real-world design and project management. Build my capabilities from working closely with customers, developing design solutions that are feasible and easy to construct and how teams can work safely, efficiently and most effective throughout the project.”

Managing Director Tim Stedman added “Cameron has already shown great potential and has been eager to learn and apply that learning across a broad range of the business departments through the tasks he has undertaken.

At FTE our degree apprentices and graduates are not locked away in specialist areas and teams, being ‘one of many’, typical of larger organisations. We provide a unique opportunity here to gain an early, broad and challenging range of skills. Exposing our trainees in every aspect of our intelligent integration design to installation approach, ensuring they are exposed and challenged in bidding, project management, site survey and inspection, scoping, optioneering, design, fabrication and installation.”
