Today is World Diabetes Day, marking the birthday of Sir Frederick Banting, one of the founding fathers of insulin.
As part of Four Tees Engineers (FTE) commitment to look after the health and wellbeing of our people we have linked up with the Diabetes Safety Organisation, a team committed to helping protect people and business against the risks of diabetes.
Our FTE people are completing the Diabetes Safety Organisation survey to help capture essential industry information. The survey results will help us better understand how we can support employees living with diabetes and provide essential prevention measures.
The Diabetes Safety Organisation has also provided thought provoking information around the impact of the type 2 diabetes on business performance, growth and sustainability. They are seeking our support and other like-minded businesses to capture more targeted and specific data related to the construction and engineering workforce. A sector anticipated to be of significantly higher risk due to the nature of work undertaken and the demographic employed.
The Diabetes Safety Organisation has advised that five million people in the UK have diabetes, 1 in 12 working-age people. Around 90-95% of people with diabetes have type 2 diabetes, a largely preventable condition that has increased 60% in the last decade.
