Chiswick Station Footbridge Opened To The Public After Innovative Solution

Four Tees Engineers (FTE) have completed the refurbishment of Chiswick Station Footbridge, and the revitalised structure has been opened to the public.

The project works involved steelwork refurbishment, strengthening repairs, protective coatings, replacement of timber treads with GRP and associated civil engineering work.

When the project team were able to expose some of the hidden detail of the structure, its condition was not as originally anticipated by the client’s designer. FTE immediately went about reviewing options to ensure any cost or programme implications of the changing scope were minimised.

Given the degree of superstructure repairs required to the bottom chord it was concluded that the most expedient solution would be to remove the main span and complete the structural repairs off site, as opposed to undertaking repairs in-situ as was originally planned. This methodology also had the advantage that painting could be undertaken in a more controlled environment, for which FTE promptly submitted cost and programme details and the revised methodology was instructed. FTE quickly mobilised with our supply partners and the work was completed and the main span structure installed on Sunday 8th Feb.
