This was the extent of the procurement brief to Four-Tees Engineers (FTE). The customer had proposed locations but beyond that the entire project development and implementation was for FTE to design and build in the most efficient and effective manner.

A new development at Northstowe required the unique design of the five new footbridges in an environmentally sensitive area with a focus on protecting and enhancing the biodiversity of the green spaces and waterways. Taking account of the sensitivity of each bridge location and the differing spans of the structures, aesthetic considerate designs were developed that utilised standard modules to provide both efficiency and absolute assurance that the footbridges would be installed to meet the extremely challenging project programme. A key priority for the customer was to avoid the need for ongoing regular maintenance and to ensure this weathering steel and hardwood materials were incorporated into the design solution.
With one stop shop in-house services, FTE were able to prototype and refine the superstructure parapet design arrangements prior to the construction period. The structures were modelled using a combination of global and local 3D analysis models, with prototypes used to design out any potential interface problems.
By validating the suitability and buildability of specific designs and fabrication details in advance, FTE maximised productivity and provided assurance of quality during the main fabrication period, also eliminating any potential rework. Collaboration between the in-house design and fabrication teams also enabled the structures to be designed to minimise the use of temporary works during installation, reducing the number of on-site activities to protect the sensitive site whilst also mitigating risks and minimising cost.
