Probably the Largest Rail Bridge Protection Beam Install in the UK

This past weekend Four-Tees Engineers (FTE) has installed what are believed to be the largest post fixed bridge crash protection beam structures in the UK.

The structures will protect the railway underbridge from the impacts of over-height vehicle collisions from traffic using the A237 Brighton Road located between Earlswood and Purley Stations at Coulsden.

The two protection beams are 744mm in diameter, 26.3m and 24.6m in length and with the associated complex mounting structures totalled 35 tonnes of carefully, detailed, fabricated and installed structural steelwork.

FTE Managing Director Tim Stedman commented “This rail bridge carries the London to Brighton line, one of Britain’s busiest main line rail routes, it is regularly having to be repaired after HGVs crash into it, causing major delays and disruption to train services. With these new protection structures in place the reliability and resilience of passenger services at this location will be significantly improved.”
