Surbiton Station – Project Completion

Four-Tees Engineers (FTE) are delighted to have supported Octavius with the completion of the complex upgrade works at Surbiton Station. Surbiton is the eighth busiest station on Network Rail’s Wessex route servicing circa 9.5 million passengers.

FTE were appointed by Octavius to survey, design, detail, fabricate and install several project critical structural steel elements. FTE works included track side wall restraints, podium roof support structures, new canopy and existing canopy support steelwork, new gutters, and anti-trespass fins.

The Podium Steelwork was the most significant element and included new connection cleats onto plates within the precast concrete walls to enable installation of the new roof support steelwork. This required extremely accurate FTE in-house advance survey works to fabricate, position, and install the permanent roof support steelwork.

The canopy steelwork elements were undertaken working from the existing station platforms with sections completed in fenced off controlled areas during station operation and where necessary within line blocks and possessions.

Adopting FTE Intelligent Integration approach created steel structures using an end-to-end design, fabrication, and installation process. Combined site inspection and survey teams improved accuracy and remove disconnects and designs made easier to install and maintain.

FTE applied fabrication expertise ensured that practicality, buildability, and cost reduction influenced design decisions. Two-stage BIM Level 2 design ensured buildability from the outset avoiding late-stage changes and costly reworks. Application of this two-stage stage detailing and production process eliminated potential clashes and enabled precise fabrication. Installation using FTE’s own teams, plant, and equipment guaranteed safety, quality, and a smooth handover for passenger services.
